CALF MAGAZINE'S FIVE QUESTIONS: WITH TSHIDISO "SKIGRAPHY" LAMOLA

Calf Magazine had the opportunity to talk to the guy who is always behind the scenes, the guy who is behind all the exquisite pictures featured on Calf Magazine. Allow us to introduce Tshidiso “Skigraphy” Lamola as he responds to questions from Calf Magazine.

FIVE QUESTIONS

1. WAS IT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT OR A DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CAMERA?

It was more curiosity that led me to pick up the camera. I remember vividly the day that changed my course of life, it was at my maternal great-grandfather's funeral. The sombre mood of the funeral that was everywhere made me want to divert my attention to something else and there my eyes locked into the camera and the love affair began. It's from that moment when the saying lingers: and the rest was history!

2. WHY THE BRAND NAME "SKIGRAPHY"?

Firstly, my nickname is "Skizo" which is where the brand name of Skigraphy emanates from. I would say "Skizo" is my alter ego. When I'm in that persona, I'm usually very bubbly and a people's person. I stand out in any environment and hence my photography takes that approach. I ensure that my clients are comfortable and customer service is at its ultimate best. I'm about ensuring that the quality of pictures stands out in the final product. When I deliver to clients, I don't just deliver a portfolio of pictures, I ensure to give them a masterpiece of distinctive quality. So, when one commissions #Skigraphy, they commission a collectors' artwork!

3. WHY COLLABORATE WITH CALF MAGAZINE?

When one talks about the alignment with the universe, and trusting in the saying: What you seek, is seeking you. It's precisely what occurred when I was head-hunted by this brand new concept digital online magazine to work with them.

I was at a stage in my rising career that I had wanted to venture out of events on my photography work. I did not want to be a limited photographer but wanted to explore different avenues in the field of photography, also including that being in the township this line of work was getting saturated and the valuing of the craftspersonship was not becoming appreciated. So I had made the decision to broaden my wings and do more work that would challenge me, but also make me a diverse photographer in the industry. The world was also moving towards a digitalised world, so logically one had to carve their way into such platforms.

As soon as the Calf Magazine team approached me, we became in sync with the vision - so I didn't need much convincing to be part of the pioneers in the digital magazine fraternity!

4. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE BRAND IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS?

I'm diversifying and the horizon has broadened, I would want my own production company offering all these diverse services in the industry of visual techniques business.

I have been involved in a wide range of photography fields: portrait, commercial, fashion, product and many more. I am also doing Videography in all its fields. I'm constantly upgrading my skills and reinvesting in my equipment.

In short, I'm on the road to building an all-encompassing visual production empire and the road to that has been in motion from the first day I took my camera as an entrepreneurial adventure.

5. NEXT MOVE?

I am an explorer who is in constant motion. The only name on the most in-demand photographer list will be Skigraphy. So, watch the space!

CALF MAGAZINE'S LOCKDOWN LEVELS - COMING SOON

COVID-19 LOCKDOWN: WHAT IS THE SITUATION OF THE HUSTLERS?

COVID-19 and the resultant lockdown has definitely been a pain for many people. We have seen many of the big DJs relying on online platforms to play live – and make money. But this demands so much data which, frankly, the greatest majority of DJs cannot afford. Entertainers who, pre-lockdown, were hustling to break into the entertainment world have been hit hard, unlike the established ones.

We have seen how the established DJs have scored trending gigs from the big TV channels. Have the less known DJs benefitted from this? The “benefits” of live online parties as well as the TV gigs during this lockdown have certainly not been on an equal basis. Some have befitted while some have been left for dead.

These are some of the questions people need to think about when reviewing the effects of the COVID-19 and the lockdown.

But how have the hustlers adapted to the lockdown? The fact is that within those who may be categorised as “small business”, only a tiny minority have the means to use online platforms to showcase their skills and thus continue to market themselves. Those who are able to showcase their work online – once in a while – cannot match the well-known superpowers, and they certainly have not scored any sponsorships.

This is not to say that those DJs who have worked hard over the years to make a name for themselves should regret ever doing so. Definitely they were not born with a “Channel O silver-spoon” in their mouths. They worked their way to the top.

We must, however, not bury our heads in the sand. We must not pretend that everything has been “kumbaya” within the entertainment world and pretend that everyone has the means to adapt to the realities of such a long lockdown.

The task of the pathfinders must, however, continue. Only those who remain strong will pull through and survive the lockdown. Without a doubt, those hustler-stories will be chronicled by CALF MAGAZINE, inspiring a new generation of hustlers. The stories of the pathfinders, pioneers and game-changers must continue to inspire post-lockdown, and post-COVID-19.
